Prolonged sitting: Short bouts of activity reduce health risks

As a writer, I spend most of my day sitting, but I’ve also found that I need to get up and do ‘analog’ stuff about once an hour. This helps with my alertness levels, but according to this study, it might also help reduce health risks.

The exact reasons why prolonged sitting is so unhealthful are not fully known, but certain metabolic factors are thought to play a part. For instance, long periods with little exertion reduce insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, while increasing levels of triglycerides — the main constituent of body fat — in the blood.
