Say what? Wasn’t this originally supposed to run through the end of October, if not November? And take a look a the following paragraph:
Through Thursday, auto dealers have made deals worth $1.9 billion and are on pace to exhaust the program’s $3 billion in early September. The incentives have generated more than 457,000 vehicle sales. Administration officials said they have reviewed nearly 40 percent of the transactions and have already paid out $145 million to dealers.
Let’s see…$3 Billion provided for the program. The program ends on Monday (signaling that it’s about out of money, or so one would expect). 457,000 vehicles sold. 40% of the transactions “have already paid out” — how much? $145 MILLION? So, if all the transactions were ‘paid out’, then it would be around $350 MILLION – let’s even round it up to $500 Million. So, what happened to the other $2.5 Billion?
